Working in broadcast news – with BBC, ITV, Sky and Metro/TFM journalists
Join us for an afternoon of in-person studio tours, training and discussion
Come along to our latest in-person event, led by experienced TV and radio journalists, when our afternoon will include:
-- Tour of BBC Newcastle's recently revamped studios, which include a new product and technology hub.
-- Workshop on live reporting, outside broadcasts and turning content into social media shorts.
-- Discussion panel: What are the challenges, opportunities and skills needed in 2023 and beyond? With guests Rachel Bullock, on-screen journalist at ITV Tyne Tees; Claire Hawthorn, senior reporter at TFM/Metro Radio; Nathan Lee, UK producer for ITV News; and Shingi Mararike, north of England correspondent for Sky News.
Our afternoon of workshops will take place in-person, on Wednesday 14th June, beginning at 1.30pm on Newcastle University's campus in Newcastle upon Tyne. Brought to you by the Civic Journalism Lab at Newcastle University, the event is free and open to anyone, regardless of experience. However, registration is essential as numbers (for the studio tour and workshop) are limited and we will need to email you key information before the event begins.
J-LAB PODCAST: Are you a subscriber yet?
Next week sees the sixth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower disaster, when fire destroyed a 23-storey tower block in West London, killing 72 people. Our guest on the latest episode of the J-Lab podcast is Martina Lees, a senior writer for the Sunday Times who has spent much of the last few years seeking answers to why the disaster really happened, and who was to blame. In our conversation, Martina explains why she became a journalist, what interested her in reporting this particular story, how she turned her reporting into an impactful campaign and how to ask the questions that no-one else is asking. Listen here on SoundCloud or here on Apple Podcasts or here on Spotify for this latest in a series of episodes that explores the journalists and stories making the news today.
