Twitter for journalists
Our next event: how reporters and news organisations can get the most from Twitter and its features... while avoiding the risks and pitfalls
Twitter is the go-to social media site for journalists – a recent survey by Muck Rack suggested more than three quarters value Twitter above all other platforms, both in terms of finding story ideas and also for sharing their reporting. In return, Twitter has launched a range of features targeted at journalists, among others - from Moments and Spaces to Tiles and Write.
In this two-hour masterclass, Tash Salmon will explore how journalists and news organisations can get the most out of Twitter and its different features – while avoiding some of the dangers and pitfalls that arise when using the platform professionally.
Tash is audience editor of The i Paper and inews. She has also held roles there as social media editor, senior news reporter, content editor and video journalist and has led previous masterclasses at the Civic Journalism Lab on audience engagement and on Instagram.
This masterclass on Wednesday 21st September from 4pm to 6pm (UK time) is brought to you by the Civic Journalism Lab in association with Newcastle University. It's free and open to anyone, but registration is essential as we'll email you joining instructions a few hours before the masterclass begins.
Please note: this is a hybrid event - you can choose to join us, in person, on Newcastle University's campus in Newcastle upon Tyne (NE1 7RU).... or you can choose to join us online, via Zoom. We'll give you further details about both options once you've registered.

J-LAB PODCAST: Are you a subscriber yet?
In our latest J-Lab podcast episode, our guest is Louise Tickle, a multi-award winning freelance journalist who has reported extensively on domestic abuse, child protection and the family courts - and how the lack of scrutiny and transparency in these courts means many women and families are being tragically failed by the justice system. Last year, Louise’s investigations for Channel 4’s Dispatches programme exposed cases of families traumatised by their encounters with family courts and judges hiding poor decisions behind secrecy rules. Earlier this year, Louise’s reporting for BBC Panorama shared the troubling stories of families who felt failed by local authorities and social workers when their children were taken into care. And her recent podcasts for Tortoise Media have exposed how a former government minister abused the secrecy of the family courts in an attempt to hide the truth that he had abused and raped his wife.. Listen here on SoundCloud or here on Apple Podcasts or here on Spotify for this latest in a series of episodes that explores the journalists and stories making the news today.
